Why is the development needed?
• Help with the fight against global warming by displacing 500 tons of CO2 emissions every year
• This site will produce approximately 1,753,000 kWh of electricity every year. This is enough to power over 530 average homes.
• The UK is currently dependant on the import of oil, coal, gas and electricity. This turbine will help with the UK security of supply.
Identifying an appropriate site for a wind turbine is a complex and lengthy process. We strive to ensure our projects have the least possible impact on the local area and consider numerous factors before we decide to progress a project.
• Good wind speed (on average 6.5 metres per second (Digital engineering))
• Good site access
• Minimal effect on locally and or nationally designated environments
• A viable connection to the electricity grid
• No impact on civil or military aviation
• The ability to site a turbine an appropriate distance from homes
The site is situated just off Groes-faen Terrace and utilises a Mountain Road, the site is 1.09km south east of Deri and is 2.21km North West of Aberbargoed.
The location and proposal are informed by a wide variety of detailed technical investigations. The application will be submitted with a suite of documents including the following:
•Aviation and Communication Statement
•Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment
•Preliminary Risk Assessment
•Planning, Design and Access Statement
•Shadow Flicker Assessment
•Transport and Access Statement
These documents will be submitted with the planning application to Caerphilly County Borough Council, where internal and external consultees will be invited to comment on and review the information. We set out below a summary of the findings for key issues:
The noise generation from the proposed development will have negligible impact on surrounding residential properties. All possible measures have been implemented to limit noise disturbance. G2 Energy Renewable Developments (G2ERD) has selected a wind turbine generator of high technological quality that allows the generator to be connected directly to the turbine without gears. This significantly reduces the noise emissions from the proposed turbine over other manufacturers.
Guidance contained in ETSU-R-97 (The Assessment and Rating of Noise from Wind Farms) has been taken into account as part of the design of the scheme. Acceptable noise thresholds are considered to be 35-40dB (A).
There are 4 separate properties located within the potential zone of influence. The closest noise-sensitive receptor (non-stakeholder) is located 552m North West of the proposed turbine.
The Noise Assessment which will accompany the planning application has calculated that the turbine noise levels at the closest noise-stakeholder receptor would be in the range of 31.4dBL A90, 10min for wind speeds between 5 and 10m/s. This os below the lower fixed threshold outlined in ETSU-R-97 and the Noise Assessment concludes that noise generation from the proposed development will have a negligible noise impact on the surrounding residential properties.
G2ERD have considered the effects of shadow flicker on residential properties throughout the site selection process. All possible measures have been taken to prevent the occurrence of shadow flicker.
Guidance documents indicate it is only dwellings that are within ten rotor diameters of the turbine and positioned 130° either side of North relative to the wind turbine that are affected by shadow flicker.
The Shadow Flicker Assessment which will be submitted with the application sets out the analysis of the potential effects from shadow flicker caused by the proposed wind turbine. Findings suggest that no dwellings surrounding the turbine would experience shadow flicker effects at any point throughout the year.
Aviation and Ministry of Defence:
There are no known impacts on Civil or MoD aviation in relation to the safety of aircraft.
Landscape & Visual Impact
It is inevitable that the turbine will be seen in the surrounding area. A formal assessment of landscape and visual impact has been undertaken in line with strict guidelines.
