g2 Energy have successfully completed the full scope of works on two separate battery energy storage sites for VLC Energy, a joint venture between Low Carbon, a renewable energy investment company, and VPI Immingham, owner of one of the largest combined heat and power plants in Europe and part of the Vitol Group. Both sites are part of the National Grid’s first Enhanced Frequency Response (EFR) tender.

In November 2016, National Grid awarded eight EFR contracts with a total capacity of 201MW and VLC Energy secured two of these contracts with a total capacity of 50MW of EFR support, this represented 25% of the total tender award. g2 Energy were engaged in December 2016 to complete the full Independent Connection Provider (ICP) design and build for two Battery Energy Storage Schemes which consisted of a 33kV, 10MW grid connection in Cleator, Cumbria (ENW area) and a 132kV, 40MW grid connection in Glassenbury, Kent (UKPN area).

Works on Site…

g2 Energy were awarded the initial contract to cover the 33kV & 132KV ICP grid connection works on both sites in December 2016 and following a further competitive tender process they were awarded the build contract for the client side civil and electrical Balance of Plant (BoP) works by the appointed EPC contractor, NEC Energy Solutions, in March 2017. g2 Energy were the only contractor working on each site and appointed as the Principal Contractor, as defined in the CDM regulations.

g2 Energy were responsible for the design and build of the two grid connections under their Lloyds register NERS accreditation; the 33kV connection for Electricity North West adoption and the 132kV connection for UK Power Networks adoption. g2 Energy also completed all of the civil and electrical engineering design and full on-site construction works for both projects. All completed with in-house design and build directly employed staff.

Battery energy storage will form a very important element of the UK’s energy strategy and we are so pleased to be heading up the works on these first large scale EFR and energy capacity storage projects to be built in the UK”

Upcoming projects for g2 Energy…

g2 Energy are also contracted on a further eight Battery Energy Storage projects for other clients, with another four in early contract negotiations.
